My studio space is a constant inspiration. Here my artwork surrounds me, always giving me something to respond to. My paintings or collages consist of multiple layers, with each layer serving as a reaction to the earlier one. I always look for harmony of colours and texture, real or perceived, I try to work with a limited palette balancing warm and cool colours opaque and transparent. I start a painting with a collage of various papers with calligraphy from old pieces or gelli prints and painted kozo off-cuts, I cover all area and then I go in with gesso or paint on the second layer defining areas of light and dark. Other times I start with large graphite and water with big spontaneous gesture and movement. I use different media, acrylic paint, soft and oil pastels, pencils and pens on canvas or wood panels, with a variety of tools including brushes, palette knives, rags and my own hands, it is an interactive process between the materials, my emotions and energy.
